Customer Rating: Summary: BUY IT! BUY IT! BUY IT! Comment: I thought I would post a review to give it some support...only to see that it's getting lots of support already! If you are a musician who has even a passing interest in synthesizers and owns a NDS, do not even ask questions - when you see a copy, BUY IT!!!! This thing is nothing short of amazing.
Sure it has limitations; about the same limitations as the Korg MS-10, (which I once owned) - but it also has features that the MS-10 never had, like the ability to save patches! (and somehow, in case you want to whine about the limitations, artists are still recording with the original Korg MS-10 today). Despite what you may think, the audio quality is quite useable and sounds great through my studio monitors. BUY IT! BUY IT! BUY IT! Is all that I can say (the other reviews do a much better job of describing the features). I am thinking about buying a 2nd copy because I want to support this kind of development and can hardly wait for what the musical future holds on the NDS platform (Roland and Yamaha are you listening?)
Customer Rating: Summary: PERFECT! Comment: I love sound and noise and being able to use this while on the train commute to work every day is a blast. It's a must have for any musician that has a DS!!!
Customer Rating: Summary: Buy it, if you are even slightly musically inclined (as I am)? Comment: The presentation is as barebones and intuitive as it gets, which makes for a suberb instrument. This is not a game in the traditional sense, it is a portable sythesizer as the title suggests. Nonetheless, it does not fail at being funner than most DS titles, if you want to get your musical fix. The two keyboards and four drums are full and you can put the music in note by note or use the stylus or drum and keyboard tool, thus allowing you to fine-tune your music to perfection. The four drums have which have their own separate synthesizer - like each keyboard (however any effects take effect on all drums at once). Like a brick and mortar sythesizer, there is all sorts of knobs, allowing you to create a inestimimal amount of different sounds, allowing your 16 loops to be as varied as you would like them.
All in all, the "game" is endlessly replayable, due to the fact that it is actually an instrument, which present excellent value for the money. I did not expect this game to be so deep and well executed, due ot the limitations of the DS, but like another reviewer said - the limitations lie within you. However it does not make a good gift for a non-musician. But if you like creating music, or want to start doing so, you will not regret this purchase; if you just want to have simplicity, this is the pinnacle of complexity on the DS.
Customer Rating: Summary: This is not a game, it is better than a game Comment: I've owned the Korg DS-10 for two days, and it is the best instrument I have ever bought. I bought my first synth in 1975 a Korg MS-10 which I still own by the way, has never broken and still plays like it did when I bought itKORG DS-10 Synthesizer. Most of my equipment is Korg."Korg you kick *#s, I love your company, I love your synths".
I didn't even bother with the manual, I was creating the mos def Hip-hop- and electronica in 1o minutes. I'm ready to take this thing out and play a club. Welcome to 21st century everybody.
You know, How I know how good this little instrument is. I showed it to some other musicians and they were so jealous I could see them turning green before my eyes.
If your a DJ or electronic musician you gotta get this. You can rock on the fly intuitively, make changes instantly. It's like two synths, two Kaos pads, a drum machine and an effects rack all in the size of a digital camera.
Buy it now before I steal all your gig's. And it will be a shame that someone old enough to be your dad stole your gigs, and maybe your groupies too!! ha ha
Customer Rating: Summary: The best program for the DS, hands down! Comment: Notice I said program, not game. That's because this isn't a game, but rather a music creation tool. It looks a bit like Fruity Loops mixed with an old tracker like FT2 graphically, but functionally it's closest analogue is Propellerhead's Reason, as you get some synths and a drum machine, and that's it. No plugins, no sample imports. Just two 2-oscillator virtual analog monosynths, an analog drum machine and a piano roll a.k.a. "grid" sequencer, along with a emulation of the KORG KAOSS Pad DJ tool.
But you don't really need more than this, simplicity is key. And when the components sound this good, you could have only ONE oscillator and it would still rock. Plus, you have an awesome effects engine which butters it all up.
The level of depth is amazing. I'm used to virtual analogs, so editing sounds is easy, just like on a PC, but there's all these little things I'm finding out you can do that turn this from just a musical idea sketchpad into a full-fledged micro studio.
This is a purchase that I have not regretted in the LEAST, I would have paid $70 for it. If the lack of tracks bother you, record a session into your PC and make a new one on the DS, and just multitrack. Simply amazing, I might make all my future tracks on just this and MilkyTracker alone.
KORG and AQ Software have saved the DS, people. You owe them your money.
